The Sacred Pilgrimage of Banaras
Banaras also known as Kashi or Varanas is not merely a city it is a living, breathing embodiment of India’s spiritual essence. Regarded as the spiritual capital of India, Banaras is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world and holds a sacred place in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism alike.
According to Hindu mythology, Banaras was founded by Lord Shiva himself. The city is considered to be older than time, and it is believed that death in Banaras ensures moksha liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth. It is called Kashi from the word Kāś, meaning “to shine” truly, the City of Light.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple
One of the Twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, this temple is the spiritual heart of Banaras. Devotees from across the world come here to offer prayers and seek liberation under Shiva’s eternal presence.

Dashashwamedh Ghat
Perhaps the most iconic of all the ghats, this is where the Ganga Aarti is performed each evening a stunning spectacle of light, fire, chanting, and devotion along the banks of the sacred Ganga.

Manikarnika Ghat
The city’s primary cremation ground, it is believed that souls cremated here attain instant liberation. The eternal flame that burns here has not gone out for centuries.
Sarnath
Just a few kilometers away from Banaras lies Sarnath, where Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. It is a serene pilgrimage spot for Buddhists around the globe.
Tulsi Manas Mandir
A sacred temple built where Saint Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas, with its walls adorned by verses from the epic.

Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple
A revered temple founded by Tulsidas, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the remover of obstacles and protector of devotees.

Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Chitrakoot is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and comfortable. Summers (April to June) can be extremely hot with temperatures soaring up to 45°C, making outdoor exploration challenging.
The monsoon season (July to September) brings lush greenery to the region but can sometimes cause inconvenience due to heavy rainfall and possible flooding of the Mandakini River.

Bamrauli airport at Allahabad is the nearest airport, 106 km. away from Chitrakoot. Next is Khajuraho Airport which is 167 km away from Chitrakoot. Both the airports have daily flight services to Delhi.
